Test of English for Aviation Communication (TEAC)

TEST OF ENGLISH IN AVIATION COMMUNICATION (TEAC)

What is a TEAC?

The Test of English for Aeronautical Communication (TEAC) is an aviation English language assessment designed to meet the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Language Proficiency Requirements and is accepted by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and EASA.

The test assesses a pilot’s ability to communicate safely and effectively in English during normal, abnormal and emergency aviation situations. It is not simply a grammar or academic English test; it evaluates real-world aviation communication skills including listening, comprehension, pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary and interaction.

Why Do Pilots Need a TEAC?

English is the international language of aviation. Pilots operating in controlled airspace must be able to understand Air Traffic Control (ATC) instructions clearly and communicate accurately to maintain the highest levels of flight safety.

The UK CAA requires pilots exercising radiotelephony privileges to demonstrate English language proficiency in accordance with ICAO standards. The minimum acceptable standard is ICAO Level 4 (Operational). Pilots who do not hold a valid English Language Proficiency endorsement may be unable to obtain or exercise the privileges of a Flight Radiotelephony Operator’s Licence (FRTOL).

When is a TEAC required?

A TEAC assessment may be required if:

  • You are applying for a UK CAA pilot licence.
  • You are applying for a Flight Radiotelephony Operator’s Licence (FRTOL).
  • You need to renew an existing ICAO Level 4 or Level 5 language proficiency endorsement.
  • You are converting a foreign pilot licence to a UK CAA licence.
  • Your language proficiency endorsement has expired.
  • Your examiner cannot award ICAO Level 6 during a flight or radiotelephony test.

ICAO English Language Proficiency Levels

The ICAO Language Proficiency Rating Scale ranges from Level 1 to Level 6.

  • Level 4 – Operational: Minimum standard required for licensing.
  • Level 5 – Extended: Higher level of proficiency with less frequent renewal requirements.
  • Level 6 – Expert: Highest level, generally recognised as lifelong validity in the UK.

Current UK CAA and EASA validity periods are:

  • ICAO Level 4: Valid for 4 years.
  • ICAO Level 5: Valid for 6 years.
  • ICAO Level 6: No routine revalidation required.

What Happens During a TEAC?

The TEAC assessment is conducted at our UK CAA and EASA approved site at Norwich Airport. The Assessment is delivered by the Interlocutor and recorded, the recording of the assessment is then sent to Lenguax for an assessment by one of their skilled language experts, candidates will typically:

  • Listen to aviation-related audio recordings.
  • Respond to operational and aviation scenarios.
  • Demonstrate clear spoken English.
  • Discuss aviation topics and situations.
  • Show an ability to manage unexpected communication challenges.

The assessment is designed to confirm that pilots can communicate effectively and safely in real aviation environments but it is not a test of aviation operational knowledge.
